Sydney-based soprano Sonya Holowell’s unique versatility and approach to nuance set her apart as a performer and director. In 2014 she was Young Artist Soprano/Director with the Song Company, and has performed at many of the leading national classical and new music festivals as a soloist, ensemble singer and improviser.
She has performed with a number of ensembles at the forefront of contemporary music including Ensemble Offspring, Australian Art Orchestra, Decibel, the Splinter Orchestra and Sydney Chamber Opera and performs regularly with her co-run ensemble Sydney Antiphony. Sonya has collaborated with many notable Australian and international artists and composers of New Music and is fast becoming known for her undertakings of such mammoth and rarely-performed works as Kurtag’s ‘Attila Jozsef Fragments’, Feldman’s ‘Three Voices’ for soprano and tape, and Shoenberg’s ‘Pierrot Lunaire’.
Sonya is also Artistic Director and principle performer at CACHE in POINT, which she developed in 2013 alongside flutist/producer Elia Bosshard, as a concert platform for contemporary classical music, inter-disciplinary experimentalism and spontaneous music. In addition to her work as a performer she is currently exploring her own personal practice incorporating Extended Vocal Technique, improvisation and electronic influences in vocal music.
