Stanier Black-Five

Stanier Black-Five

Stanier Black-Five is the ex-UK and now New Zealand-based sound artist and writer, Jo Burzynska. Her audio work is largely based on the manipulation of her own environmental recordings, which she uses to create dense soundscapes that use sources such as the pounding rhythms of trains to more recently, the sounds of the earthquakes that have shaken her home city.

Her work spans live performance to recorded works, such as her most recent album, Avast! (Entr’acte); gallery installations to public art. She also writes on sound, with pieces published in specialist magazines, such as The Wire, Noisegate and Datacide, as well as the wider media.

Also a respected international wine writer, her interest in the intersections between sound and taste has converged in a number of multi-sensory projects. These include the sound and taste installation, Oenosthesia, and the curation of monthly wine and sound lists for The Auricle Wine & Sound bar that she helped establish in Christchurch, New Zealand.
